Am I alone in thinking all these would be better off at Name State rather than Name State, Nigeria? Is there a reason for the longer scheme? If not, the shorter one'd save us an awful lot of typing when we get round to doing the Nigeria articles... Hajor 22:23, 21 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Hi, Hajor. Yes, there is a reason. I did that to remove ambiguity - there are several cities throughout the world named LAGOS, for example, and RIVERS brought up an article about, um, rivers. Moreover, some Nigerian cities have the same name as states, and for all I know there could be a multitude of similarly named places thoughtout Africa. I changed a few of them, then thought it best to rename all of them, for consistency. (David Cannon) — Preceding undated comment added 02:41, 22 January 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah... consistent it certainly is, beautifully so. (In contrast, the mess of city & state name formats over at States of Mexico would make your blood run cold.) But what I meant to say was that (for example) Rivers State would be just as useful for disambiguation as Rivers State, Nigeria – ie, not necessary to specify "Nigeria" each time. Lagos could be disambig'd by Lagos State vs. Lagos (Nigeria). Etc. Just a thought. Cheers, Hajor 03:07, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the thought, Hajor. I think your suggestion is a good one, and when I get time, I might go over the list and redo it. And thanks for pointing out the States of Mexico mess. I'll try to make time to straighten it out (which will mean correcting a lot of linked pages, also). See ya later-) (David Cannon, 22 January 2004, 9.35am GMT)

Hi, David. If you do decide to tackle Mexico, check out the talk page there so you can see the guidelines I was trying to follow when I took a crack at it just last month (and there was only so much I could do before coming up against undeletable pages where I wanted to move other articles to, etc.). Think it through and, if you come up with an approach you'd like to try, perhaps you would outline it on that talk page before starting? See you around, Hajor 15:28, 22 Jan 2004 (UTC)

"Shariah States"

Should we have a category for the states in Nigeria that have "Sharia" as state law?iFaqeer (Talk to me!) 01:03, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

"Nigeria states map" template

[edit]

I replaced the map and list of states with the {{Nigeria states map}} template. The problem with this is that the politics of Nigeria template is so long that it pushes this other template to the bottom of it, creating a large piece of trapped white space. Any suggestions as to how to fix this short of adding more text above it?  :) Thanks. --EarthPerson 18:25, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there EarthPerson, good to see someone else working on Nigeria stuff. I moved the map to the other side of the template, and I think I fixed it that way. Picaroon (Talk) 18:56, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I noticed that when I went back to this. You must be running higher than 1024 x 768 resolution. It looks better, but the names are below the map except for the word "States" which is hanging out to the right. I'd ask you to narrow the graphic, but it's nice to be able to see the numbers without having to enlarge it. I stumbled onto Nigeria yesterday on new page patrol with Vivian Fowler Memorial College. Once I found an Elementary School in Texas with the same name, I spent an hour looking to see if they were named after the same person. It turns out not to be the case. See my comment here. Still, I think it would be a great cultural exchange if each school knew of each other. Perhaps their towns might even become sister cities. --EarthPerson 20:04, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The map "Current states and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja" has numbered areas (1, 2, 3, 4); and there is a list of "States" just below this map, also with numbering. Naturally this page design let readers believe the numbers correspond, BUT THEY DON'T! If they don't, it is better removing the numbers from the "States" list to reduce confusion. [2015.09.24 ak]
